Famous Rathskeller, Spats Cafe holding 1 last call

STATE COLLEGE – Things have been busy as the The All-American Rathskeller and Spats Cafe is holding one last call.

The State College staple will be locking its doors for good and customers have been there since they opened Saturday morning.

The night is still young, but fans have been coming and going at the Rathskeller.

After being in operation for over 80 years, emotions are on the line as they say goodbye to the iconic bar. Customers say those memories they made -- will last forever.

"This is really the heart of State College here," customer Jessica O'Neill said,

"It's just so much history in this place it's unbelievable ... I mean, c'mon, 1933, seriously think about it you know? What other place?" former employee and customer Brian Kobularcik said.

"It's a shame they're even letting this happen," longtime customer Elliott Grumer said.

"Very bittersweet," former employee Harry Schwartz said.

"We never, ever, ever, expected this day to happen and sadly it's here," another customer said.

Several customers gathered at the Rathskeller for the last time.

"We all wore our onesies to show how much we love it and kind of come all together one last time and celebrate the end of an era, really," O'Neillyublynski said.

Some people revealed their favorite memories made here at the "Skeller,"

"You remember just all the smiling faces, the people coming in, the people you meet, the friendships you have," Schwartz said.

"Getting the pony, the small seven ounce bottles, you buy a case... they throw a couple ice cubes on there and you just drink all day,” Grumer said. “Wonderful times."

Some even talked about the state college tradition of meeting up at the bar.

"This place hasn't changed in 80 years,” Grumer said. “It was always a staple when you come back to Penn State."

A staple where one married couple met at the front door.

"We met here, right there at that door. Oct. 25, 1990," Kobularcik said.

Some couples even coming by the bar once a week together.

"We've been coming here for over 40 years and we just made so many friends,” longtime customer Bob Nelson said. “It's the best bar in State College and we cry when we think about this is our last call."

As the bar says last call, customers can enjoy live entertainment on the famous beer-soaked sticky floors.

"I'm sure there will be something new coming along but nothing will ever replace the Skeller," O'Neillyublynski said.

The Skellar will officially be closed after Saturday night. Several people continue to come in and out of those doors and the madness will continue until they close at 2 a.m.
