CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (TND) — A concert to honor fraternity brothers that defended the U.S. flag from pro-Palestinian protesters is in its early planning stages, organizers announced.
Images and videos circulating social media in May depicted members of the University of North Carolina’s Pi Kappa Phi, Alpha Epsilon Pi and other fraternities holding up the U.S. flag. The image was taken during a campus protest during which demonstrators attempted to raise a Palestinian flag in its place, according to freelance journalist Bryan Anderson.
A GoFundMe created to throw the frat “a rager” earned $515,517 before it was closed by organizers who now say the event, dubbed Flagstock, is schedule for Labor Day. Attendance will be invite-only and will be free-of-charge for attendees.
The party date is set for Labor Day, September 2nd,” organizers wrote via the GoFundMe page. “These great young guys defended our flag and created a unifying national cultural moment. Everyone in America wanted to thank these fine young patriots. On Labor Day, we will get to do just that.”The event will be organized under Pints for Patriots, a group which will handle security and communicating with school officials. The group’s goal is to “ensure every cent of donor dollars goes to throwing these fine young Americans the epic rager they earned.”
Country singer John Rich reached out to the fraternities in May and offered to perform at the event.
“I told them I was really proud of them and I hope that their patriotism and their courage in that moment ignites a fire across other universities,” Rich said of his conversation with the fraternity members. “It’s incredible, the spirit of Americans.”
